How to get into the real fat burning zone!
Have you ever noticed how shredded fighters are?
Well guess what, there’s a training system that can give you that Greek God/Goddess like figure without having to risk an arm bar or getting punched in the face. The system is known as Training For Warriors and yes it works for training fighters and average everyday folks like us too. In fact there are over 250 affiliate locations in 36 different countries offering the program today! Thousands of people are “Bringing out the warrior within!” and you could too.
By now we all know the rules concerning weight are mostly about caloric expenditure and if we want to lose we must burn off more than we consume. In more recent history we have discovered that as important are the calories that we put in (what we eat) so are the calories that we expend (how we burn them). When I was in school learning to become an exercise physiologist we were taught that in order to burn fat we had to stay in the aerobic zone otherwise known as “the FAT burning zone.” It was low intensity long duration activity like walking or jogging. While this fat burning zone does actually exist the idea that this was effective for a chiseled physique was off. The truth is that your body prefers to burn a higher percentage of fat when it is at rest and during activities that are easy to sustain for long periods of time like jogging and walking and we burn less percentage of fat during higher intensity activities like sprinting and weightlifting.
The thing is that we burn so many more total calories during high intensity anaerobic activities and keep burning those calories long after the session is over to build and repair from the activity.
EPOC- Excess post oxygen consumption and caloric expenditure:
And so the days of long duration slow burn cardio are out and while some people still enjoy a good dose of mind-numbing low intensity aerobic work we can say, with research to back it up, that this style of training is not efficient for burning much fat and may even put a serious amount of stress on joints that can’t handle the repetition and pounding day after day. While science is ever evolving it is clear to see the evidence in terms of real results in front of us that short bursts of high intensity work shred fat. The reason is due to EPOC…Say what?…Excess post oxygen consumption. Or the amount of oxygen debt that needs to get paid back to the body’s tissues due to the demands of the activity. EPOC is much higher in high intensity anaerobic or what we formerly referred to as metabolic conditioning and therefore causes the body to work harder to recover and demands more energy (calories) to do so. So you see, the recovery process causes the body to burn more calories over time. Not only that but this also helps put muscle on the body, assuming nutrition, rest and tissue recovery are adequate, and more muscle equals a higher metabolism and a higher metabolism demands more energy (calories) to run. While I am simplifying this concept I think you get the gist.
The TFW Hurricane
One of the signature workouts of the system is the HURRICANE! A workout that contains short durations of high intensity movements like sprinting followed by lifting weights or other body weight activities. If you have had the pleasure of trying one of these workouts then you know it earns its name. While there is more to this holistic program than the Hurricane session it is a notable piece and deserves its day in the papers. The Hurricane is part of the fitness system known as Training for Warriors developed by the coach that unquestionably made MMA training what it is today, Martin Rooney.
Why is this style of exercise named after…wait for it… an actual hurricane. Let’s explore! A hurricane is a brief but powerful storm so intense it is given a category to define just how powerful it is. Typically the level of damage and resources necessary to recover from it is reflective of its distinct category. Martin Rooney realized this and so named this exercise session appropriately. The training Hurricane is also characterized by its level of power and destruction and the level of a HURRICANE training session will dictate the amount of energy and time needed to fully recover. The higher the category, the more destruction and the more recovery necessary, just like the storm. While this method originally was used by Rooney to mimic the time, energy and strength demands of an MMA fight he came to realized that the results where consistent and the training could be used in other applications.
Over the last 15 years the Training For Warriors system and this amazing metabolic workout has been proven to work outside the ring, for athletes of other sports and for ordinary people looking to build strength, melt fat and have fun while they are doing it. Maybe Rooney stumbled upon this by accident or maybe his knowledge of human performance had something to do with it, either way current science and empirical evidence definitely backs it up.
What’s my point! If you still need convincing then you have to come in and try a Hurricane workout. Not only will you feel its effects you will notice the results. Ok so it will take more than one workout to get results, but the one is fun and exciting and will leave you wanting more.
